Second in an occasional series…
Sometimes, here in Ukraine, I get taken for an American. No offence taken there, I’ve been to, and like America. But no question the US is having a fairly rough time of it just now. The world’s largest economy on the brink of defaulting domestically, barely able to keep its iconic Statue of Liberty open. Meanwhile, internationally, Amanda Knox continues to put her country and countrymen in an invidious position. Found guilty in her retrial and how would the USA respond to an Italian request for extradition? Found innocent and discontent rumbles on about how the American machine steamrollered over an Italian judicial process. And the body count mounts in Syria as US flip-flopping goes on.
Perhaps our Yank cousins can take some comfort from the fact that in Ukraine, there is tangible support for their troubled nation -
This Odessa barman likes his Stars and Stripes served classic -
As does this chap, or dude -
Not so much this fellow, or homey, whose drinking tea may well be a nod to the ‘special relationship’ -
Even more overtly nodding is our Odessa trader, with his double flag jacket, and word I have no idea the meaning of -
Or this young lady (broad, perhaps) with her combi Union Jack, Stars n’ Stripes bikini -
For the most part though, Old Glory is treated traditionally, more so than the Jack as it happens, be it on tops -
Or even this rather striking spangled skirt, seen in Bila Tserkva. Get that lady a Green Card -
Let’s wish America the best in pulling through this time, they can be sure Ukraine is flying / wearing the flag for them.
